About Mrs. Philion
I'm thrilled to be your child's teacher! I have been teaching since 2000. I have taught first grade, fourth grade, and fifth grade. This is my ninth year teaching fifth grade and I absolutely love working with this age group! I'm excited for you to see the enormous growth that your child will demonstrate this year!
I graduated with a B.S.in Education from Central Michigan University with a child development endorsement and emphasis in language arts. I received a Master's In the Art of Teaching as well as fifteen additional credit hours from Marygrove College. I look forward to attending educational seminars and classes each year as well.
Outside of my passion for teaching, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, reading, and traveling...especially in our great state of Michigan. My family enjoys boating and swimming in the summer months and skiing and snowmobiling in the winter months. I've been married to my husband for fourteen years. He is a mechanical engineer at Ford Motor Company. We have two wonderful children. Shelby is eleven and loves playing the piano & violin, showing rabbits, and playing tennis & basketball. Cole is eight and loves soccer, tennis, football, riding his dirt bike, and inventing things. I always seem to have funny stories to share about my family and pets with my fifth graders each day!
I want your child to feel like our classroom is his/her home away from home. We will continually get to know one another by sharing stories from our personal lives and foster a sense of family throughout our experiences this year. I'm looking forward to working with each and every one of my students and parents. Together, we are going to make this the best school year ever!

TEAM Binder: “Together Everyone Achieves More” will be our classroom motto this year. Please send in a 1 ½ inch binder with the clear view sleeve on the front so that I can slide in a name page for your child. Anything smaller will not accommodate the contents and anything larger may not fit in your child’s desk. Included in this binder will be a planner (supplied by the school), pocket folders, notebook, and supply pouch. This will be a great tool for keeping your child organized this year. (I found all of these items at Target this summer)
Planners: Your child will be using his/her planner daily to stay organized with daily expectations. Please take the time to look your child’s planner over each day.
Homework: The vast majority of work your child will bring home is work not completed in class and projects to support our units of study. In the event your student is consistently spending more than 30 minutes per night of concentrated effort (in addition to their reading) please contact me!
It is vital to check Power School at least once a week (Students will have a log-in as well). Missing work will be noted in Power School as missing. Work needs to be completed as we move through our curriculum to support the learning. Recess detention can be assigned as a behavior consequence or elected by the student if more time is desired to complete assignments. Now that we are using standards based grading, please look for a score of 1,2,3,4 rather than looking at percentages in Powerschool.
Accelerated Reader Assignment: All students are required to complete a minimum of 25 accelerated reader points per trimester. This will be averaged in as one grade for the trimester. The deadline for points to be earned is typically one week before the end of the marking period. Students also have daily access to their records. Please feel free to email me if you would like me to look up the current point total for your student.
Volunteers: I can always use volunteers! I could use parents for making copies, working in small groups with students, and other such opportunities. My highest need at this time is assistance in running copies and listening to students read. If you ever have an unexpected day off and would like to spend time with us just email me and I will be happy to put you to work!
Classroom Agendas: I believe consistency vastly contributes to the success of our classroom. Daily agendas will be posted on our projection screen. Although things do come up we will try to keep to our agenda as much as possible. We gain valuable time in transitions when everyone knows what to expect and when.
Friday Folders: You can look for your child’s work along with important notes each Friday. Your child should return the folder on Monday or Tuesday.
Snack / Water: We will have a working snack every morning and afternoon. Healthy snacks such as baby carrots, apples, or cheese are encouraged. No chips or candy please! It is important to send something in for your child each day. Students should have some sort of water bottle each day as well.
Toys/Electronics: As a way to prevent lost or stolen items, all toys and electronics should be left at home. Anything that is brought in (at your own risk) needs to stay in your child’s backpack. Thank you for your help in this matter! Students may use a device for self-selected reading time and for times when we are researching topics.
Money: If your child needs to bring money to school for lunch, field trips, etc. please put it in a sealed envelope clearly labeled with your child’s name, my name, the amount inside the envelope, and what the money is for.
Birthdays: We love to celebrate birthdays. Treats may be sent in for the whole class. Please let me know in advance. Summer and holiday birthdays can be celebrated too!
Instant Alert: Please update your instant alert at armadaschools.org. Click on the Instant Alert Program button and follow the prompts.
Conferences: (Please be sure you signed up at our open house) I will send home a reminder of your scheduled time a few weeks ahead of time.
Newsletter: I send out a lot of informational e-mails. Please check your e-mail regularly for updates on what is happening in our classroom.
No-Name Papers: These papers will be put in a box and is the responsibility of the student to manage.
Classroom Management: Please see our classroom website to learn more about the Love and Logic philosophy that I use with my students. Positive incentives will be used to encourage appropriate behavior. We are human and do make mistakes. Most of the time a simple reminder of classroom expectations is enough to get them back on track. If a reminder isn’t enough and the behavior continues, I will ask him/her the responsible thinking questions (What are you doing? What should you be doing? What are you going to do now? What’s going to happen if you disrupt again?)
Box Tops: Please collect these and send them in with your child. Our school earns a substantial amount of money through this effort!
